The Foster Grandparent Program provides volunteer opportunities for persons aged 55 and older to serve as mentors, tutors, and caregivers for children and youth with special needs. They serve throughout Pueblo County in day care centers, hospitals, head start programs schools, group homes, and non-profit agencies. Foster Grandparents receive a tax-free stipend, reimbursement for transportation, assistance with meals during service, annual physical examinations, and accident and liability insurance. They work 15-20 hours a week. Foster Grandparents must meet income guidelines, be at least 55 years of age, and participate in pre-service orientation and in training workshops throughout their service. The program gives participants the opportunity to share a lifetime of experience with youth and join the half million older Americans who are strengthening communities across the country as member of the National Senior Service Corp.
